Which double strollers are best: Side by side or front and back and why?
Which double strollers are best: Side by side or front and back and why?
We are looking at all kinds
Double jogging stroller
The classic 4 wheel back and front
Hard to tell which is best!

I reckon the front and back one’s are the best simply because you can move around the shopping centre easier and you don’t have to worry about getting stuck anywhere.
Both are best for different reasons.
Side by side they interact. Good and bad, often bad.
Side by side they see more, very good.
Front and back may face you, good for small infants.
Front and back fits through doorways easier.
Jogging stroller great on rough roads and for well, jogging.
Umbrella strollers great for small cars, easy to keep handy.
Snap and go are great for quick uses, don’t have to take babies out of car seats.
Its not a clear cut case. I would go front and back snap and go for a young infant, then side by side once they start looking around. You need side by side for sight seeing, like the zoo.
I have the Baby Trend Double side-by-side stroller and i love it. I also have the Baby Trend Sit-n-stand regular stroller which is front to back. It’s a little awkward because it feels so long but it’s nice to go shopping with or to crowded places because you fit through the isles better.
Joggers are great for outdoor use, but they make LOUSY every day strollers, particularly the doubles. They’re harder to maneuver in stores because they’re often too wide for the racks, too wide for some doors, and they’re quite heavy.
Front to back are nice for twins, but they’re often heavy, hard to turn and take up a lot of trunk space.
Sit and Stand types are good for families with a baby and a preschooler, but lousy when you have a toddler/older sibling that likes to nap.
Side by side strollers work best for similar sized babies (within 10-15lbs of each other), but you can kind of fudge that by sticking the diaper bag on the side with the smaller child. That said, avoid the cheapo double umbrella strollers if you go for this option. They handle like crap.
An option that you didn’t mention is a stroller that you can add a toddler/doubles seat to. This is my personal favorite. Strollers that fall into this category include most of the Phil and Ted’s strollers, Uppa Baby Vista, Valco Trimode/Matrix/Quad, BabyJogger City Elite/City Select and Bumbleride Queen B. These have a longer useful life than a typical double stroller as you can use it as a single stroller once the older child no longer needs/wants to ride in the stroller.
When my mumhad her twins (10 years ago) we had a side by side stroller for them, because she didn’t want one to miss out by being at the back. In most places it fits through the doors but can be awkward. When they were around 4 months old my mum bought 2 inexpensive umbrella strollers and if there was 2 people she would ALWAYS use these instead.
The 3 wheel jogging strollers are good if you walk, go to parks, etc a lot because they are light and have a great turning radius.
For just a regular everyday stroller, I like the side by side. First of all, you don’t have to deal with arguments over who gets to sit in front (for toddlers). And it’s not hard to see and talk to both babies like with the front and back. Plus, the front and bank ones are heavy and a pain in the a$$ to fold up.
My sister has twin boys and she has the best stroller I’ve seen. It’s a Combi twin stroller. It fits through doors, not to heavy, has a good harness, and an adjustable seat. But the BEST thing about this is how it folds up. You fold it up so it’s flat, then you can turn the sides in so the left and right folded seat face each other and lock. It folds up close to the same size as a single stroller, which is great for storage and taking in the car.. This is a link to their site and another link w/ a video showing how it folds.
